ROADWEEDS OF THE UPPER PENINSULA

Alfalfa is common household name but many people are not familiar with the usually purple blooms and somewhat gangly appearance of the plant.  It generally grows in colonies of a few square feet along roadside to spreading throughout entire fields.  It was brought to North America as high quality forage for livestock and has been widely planted.  The flower heads contain small clusters of flowers that are fairly small and inconspicuous.  The leaves are similar to clover.
